Everyone who owns an iPhone has likely experienced that frustrating moment when an incoming or active call gets cut off just by pressing the lock button.
Since I have a Max-sized iPhone and comparatively tiny hands, I often find myself in this situation—picking up a call, only to wonder why the person on the other end isn’t speaking. At first, I thought it was some kind of power move—an awkward silence from the caller. However, after several instances, I painfully realized that I had been accidentally ending calls just by pressing the lock button while raising the phone to my ear.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. This issue is especially common among headphone users who, out of habit, press the iPhone lock button during a call before putting their phone in their pocket. Instead of locking the screen while on a call, they unknowingly disconnect the call, only realizing the mistake later.
Why This is More Than Just an Annoyance
In casual conversations, accidentally hanging up on a friend or relative might just lead to an “Oops, my bad!” moment. However, it’s a different story when you’re on an important business call. Suddenly cutting off a client, manager, or business associate could disrupt negotiations, make you seem unprofessional, or even jeopardize a deal.
This problem doesn’t just affect busy professionals—it has also been plaguing my grandma and, I’m sure, many other elderly iPhone users who may not be familiar with iPhone call settings. She finds it baffling when her calls mysteriously disconnect just because she pressed the power button during a call instead of locking the screen.
How to Stop Your iPhone from Hanging Up Calls When Pressing Lock
Thankfully, Apple provides a fix for this problem, though it’s buried deep within the iPhone Accessibility settings. Here’s how to prevent your iPhone from disconnecting calls when you press the lock button:
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
- Under the Physical and Motor section, select Touch.
- Scroll down and toggle on “Prevent Lock to End Call.”
That’s it! Now, your iPhone will no longer hang up calls when you press the lock button, allowing you to lock your screen while on a call without worrying about accidental call disconnections.
